#88SSY Check-Ins: Alex Glover, Seattle Seawolves

By Charles Hamaker

Seattle, WA - The Seattle Sports Star of the Year Awards, hosted by the Seattle Sports Commission, are the place to be for all things Seattle sports and their accomplishments on and off the field of play. Whether that be professionally or collegiately, the awards show features the biggest athletes, media, and sports personality to grace the Pacific Northwest from the past, the present, and the future. Converge Media and Circling Seattle Sports were on site at the Westin Downtown Seattle to get the sights and sounds of the night, including six sit-downs with athletes from differing teams, and a separate sit down with a mascot. The first one features Seattle Seawolves hooker Alex Glover, who plays on the front line in rugby for Seattle’s professional franchise.

Glover hails from the Bay Area and is now only in his second year with the organization, so this awards show was a brand new environment for the Saint Mary’s College alumni. Previously playing for the Los Angeles Giltinis, a team that is currently suspended from operations due to sanctions from the league, Glover is still getting the lay of the land here in the Emerald City. Teammate and Team USA member Martin Iosefo, who was actually presenting an award at the event, brought Glover along to “Washington Sports legendary Heaven” so that he could get a better idea of the community and the different members of the Seattle sports area. Safe to say when he’s not helping the Seawolves pursue their third MLR Shield, Glover now has a better feel for what this cities sports scene is like.

You know, this is my first time here. Martin Iosefo took me, shout out to him. He’s been doing a good job, he has to present. I’m coming as a plus one. But a lot of sports people are here, I’ve seen KJ Wright, I was almost about to be a fanboy trying to get a picture and everything like that. Everybody’s pretty cool, a lot of stuff hasn’t started yet, but very, very formal.
— Alex Glover, Seattle Seawolves Hooker, on the atmosphere of the Seattle Sports Star of the Year awards
One thing that notice because I’m from the Bay Area, I’m from California, is sports fans coming to a lot of stuff. You know, a lot of matches a lot of games, whether it’s soccer, basketball, baseball. It’s something else, you know, in the winter/spring. And even now in the summer that you could come out bring a family, nice, easy sport, you could talk to a players after and just something that’s going in America in general.
— Alex Glover, Seattle Seawolves Hooker, on why fans should come watch the Seawolves play
I would probably say like in different areas, you get your different sports teams, you know what I mean? For example, in baseball, like in the Bay Area, you’ve got Giants and A’s and stuff like that. So, here it’s just Seattle, there’s nothing else. So that’s why I think that people come out here, and have a good time, come to every game and just a real big sports fandom.
