Seattle, WA - It was another winning day for the Seattle Mariners minor league affiliates, as every team that played in the teams system except for the Modesto Nuts picked up a victory. It continues to be a strong season across the board for the Mariners themselves and their farm system, as the product of some strong drafts taking place as well as acquiring some strong prospects in other ways (including international signings) is this winning with the different teams. Once again, minor league affiliate Berlin Kofoed has you covered with the recap, this time for the games on June 7th, 2024!

DSL Mariners did not play - game postponed due to inclement weather

Arizona Complex League

  • ACL Mariners (13-13) - ACL Rockies (14-11)

  • 8 - 9

  • W: Yensy Bello (1-0)

  • L: Engel Silvestre (0-1)

A rally in the 10th inning gave the ACL Mariners their 13th win of the season, bringing their record exactly to .500 and hopefully pushing them to continue on trending this way. The team saw 7 pitchers brought out throughout the game to try to stop the ACL Rockies from running away with things completely, and it was Yensy Bello in his 6th game that locked it down and earned his first win.

Blake Rambusch - still on rehab with the team - got things started for the team when a single into center field brought home Carlos Jimenez. Jarrod Belbin was up next, sending a triple (3) into right field, scoring both Felnin Celesten and Rambusch. By the end of the first, the ACL Mariners were up 4-1. They couldn’t get anything else going and unfortunately let the ACL Rockies tie things up in the 3rd. The lead would go back and forth from inning to inning, with things luckily tying back up in the bottom of the 9th with two outs. Junior Gonzalez doubled (3( to score Belbin. As Gonzalez tried to push to 3rd, he was tagged out, ending the inning and moving on to extra innings.

When the ACL Rockies got ahead by one, it was up to the ACL Mariners to get 2 runs if they wanted to end the game in the 10th. Gonzalez started the inning at 2nd base, bringing up Dervy Ventura to bat. With a single into right first, Gonzalez was able to score. Ventura advanced to 3rd on a throwing error from the pitcher, putting him comfortably in scoring position with no outs. A sacrifice fly from Kelvin Alcantara easily brought in Ventura, allowing the ACL Mariners to secure a 9-8 win.

Low-A: Modesto Nuts

  • Modesto Nuts (37-16) - Fresno Grizzlies (31-23)

  • 5 - 6

  • W: Welinton Herrera (6-2)

  • L: CJ Widger (1-1)

Game 04 (2-2)

Another loss pushes a series win further from the Modesto Nuts, but with two games to go, there is still time for them to win overall against the Fresno Grizzlies (Colorado Rockies). Elijah Dale took the mound for his 11th game, but he did not factor into the decision made at the end of the game. The loss would be awarded to the pitcher brought into the 10th inning, CJ Widger, which was his first loss of the season. Dale started off the game strong, striking out 6 and only allowing 2 runs, but the run support wasn’t enough to keep their heads above water. Relief pitcher Brayan Perez could not strike out a batter in his 2 innings and allowed another 3 runs to be stacked up.

  • Dale’s final line: 5.0IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 6K, 0HR, 3.97ERA, 73-47.

In 41 plate appearances, the Nuts struck out 16 times and walked 6. The team was 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving 14 on base. When the bats are hot for the team, there is no stopping them. However, when they aren’t knocking home runs and deep doubles into the outfield, Modesto still struggles in getting players home. Despite the loss and some frustrating stats, there were some very exciting and notable plays.

In the 5th inning, Michael Arroyo tacked on his 7th home run on a fly ball into left field. After Arroyo came around home and got Modesto tied up with Fresno, 2-2, Lazaro Montes stepped up and sent his own homer (10) out of right field, giving Modesto the lead for the first time. In the 7th, Montes would tack on one more homerun, bringing himself and Arroyo home for a final total of 5 runs and tying the game, eventually forcing extra innings.

A sac-fly in the bottom of top of the 10th proved to be insurmountable in the end, with Modesto striking out three in a row in their final outing.

High-A: Everett AquaSox

  • Everett AquaSox (26-28) - Vancouver Canadians (24-26)

  • 9 - 2

  • W: Marcelo Perez (1-3)

  • L: Chris McElvain (3-3)

Game 04 (2-2)

The Everett AquaSox showed up to this game on fire, ready to tack on another win against the Vancouver Canadians (Toronto Blue Jays), scoring 3 runs in 3 separate innings and pushing themselves hard on the field to stop Vancouver nearly every chance they could. Marcelo Perez got his 10th start of the season, being granted his 1st win when the final out was called. Perez struck out an impressive, career-high 9 batters in 6.0 innings, pitching 83-60. This was quite a game for the young pitcher, and the win was absolutely deserved.

  • Perez’s final line: 6.0IP, 4H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 9K, 0HR, 5.80ERA, 83-60.

In the first inning, Josh Hood (10), Jared Sundstrom (9) and Bill Knight (11) all racked up a stolen base. Knight singled, scoring Hood and Sundstrom, before stealing second base for himself. Hood tacked on number 11 in the 2nd, Sundstrom got number 10, and Brock Rodden stole his 18th. I know I focus a lot on stolen bases from time to time, and it’s because they are fun and keep things exciting. Plus, a local to Everett pet supply shop donates bags of animal food for every stolen base, which makes things even more exciting at Funko Field. Thanks, Sam’s!

Gabriel Moncada, Rodden, and Victor Labrada knocked back to back doubles (4, 12, and 11 respectively), which would have loaded the bases if Moncada and Brock weren’t so fast, scoring on Labrada’s knock into right field. Hood gets out at first on a groundout, but while Vancouver was distracted forcing Hood out, Labrada crossed home and put Everett to their winning run total of 9. One solo home run from Vancouver attempts to give them some life in the game, but Everett comes out victorious, 9-2.

AA: Arkansas Travelers

  • Arkansas Travelers (31-23) - Springfield Cardinals (32-23)

  • 2 - 0

  • W: Juan Mercedes (3-2)

  • L: Trent Baker (3-4)

  • S: Troy Taylor (6)

Game 04 (2-2)

While the Springfield Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) racked up more hits than the Arkansas Travelers, the Travelers were able to keep Springfield from scoring and won in a 2-0 shutout. The team's efforts gave Juan Mercedes his 3rd win of the season, finally giving him more wins than losses out of his 11 games so far this year. Peyton Alford earned his 7th hold after keeping Springfield scoreless through his 2.0 innings. Troy Taylor continued to amaze, keeping his ERA at 0.00, striking out 1, and earning his 6th save since his promotion to Double-A.

  • Mercedes’s final line: 6.0IP, 3H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 6K, 0HR, 2.50ERA, 77-60.

The game went scoreless until the bottom of the 6th inning. Jake Anchia reached on a single to right field, advancing when Kaden Polcovich grounded out. With a Harry Ford single, Anchia scored and got the Travs on the board. The game fell back into some back and forth for a full inning, until Polcovich walked and stole (9) to land himself on second in the bottom of the 8th. Due to a fielding error, Ford was able to reach base and Polcovich was able to score. Taylor made short work of the next 3 batters from Springfield, finishing the game in 11 pitches with 8 strikes.

AAA: Tacoma Rainiers

  • Tacoma Rainiers (33-28) - Reno Aces (29-32)

  • 9 - 2

  • W: Emerson Hancock (2-1)

  • L: Jamison Hill (0-1)

Game 04 (2-2)

The bats were on and moving steadily for the entirety of the 4th game between the Tacoma Rainiers and the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks), earning 9 hits and 9 runs. They were 3-for-11 with RISP, which is refreshing to see with how many times I see teams being 0-for when it comes to that specific game stat. Emerson Hancock earned his 2nd win, going 6.0 innings and striking out 5.

  • Hancock’s final line: 6.0IP, 4H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 5K, 0HR, 2.17ERA, 85-52.

Tyler Locklear knocked his first Triple-A homerun out of the park on a fly ball to left center field, continuing to show the strength and power Locklear has already been exhibiting through the levels of the minor league farm. A fielding error combined with Samad Taylor’s speed put the Rainiers up 3-0 in the bottom of the second. Jason Vosler earned his 10th home run on a two-run knock into right field, putting the team up 5-0.

The Rainiers put forward 9 runs before allowing Reno to even get onto the board and officially into the game. Back to back doubles gave them 2 runs, the lead for Tacoma still being strong at 7-2. Before the 7th inning would conclude, they would put another couple of runs on the board, earning the winning score of 9-2. A flyout, groundout, and strikes would finish things up for game 04.
