Seattle Tempest 2025 Western Ultimate League Schedule Breakdown
By Becca Weinberg, edited by Charles Hamaker
Seattle, WA - With the Seattle Tempest season getting underway in just a few short weeks, it’s time to break down the team’s 2025 season schedule as the journey begins to another Western Ultimate League (WUL) championship. Coming off of a disappointing 2024 season, where the Tempest fell short of their quest to win a third straight WUL title and finished last in the Northwest Division, the new roster of seasoned veterans and dominant rookies is hungry for an improved 2025 season.
WEEK 0: Seattle vs Oregon Northwest Cup
On March 8th, Tempest will play a pre-season showcase game in Eugene, Oregon, with a unique game format. There will be three periods of ultimate frisbee played, in an effort to bring the Pacific Northwest ultimate frisbee communities together and provide an opportunity for players to get touches before the regular season starts. The first period will feature Tempest against Oregon Soar, with a second period of a men’s matchup between Seattle Cascades and Oregon Steel, and one final period of mixed play, where all four teams will combine and compete against each other. This low stakes showcase game will be important for each team to see how their new rosters mesh together, and create new ways for ultimate frisbee fans to engage with their favorite players.
WEEK 1: BYE
WEEK 2: Seattle Tempest vs Oregon Soar
Three weeks after playing Soar in a more relaxed environment, the Tempest will open their regular season at home against the Soar on March 29th in a much more significant matchup. Soar, formerly known as Oregon Onyx, is coming off a recent change in ownership and team identity, and did not play last season while undergoing these changes. It features a very new roster of young talent, as well as multiple returning veterans known throughout the Oregon ultimate frisbee community for their dominance. Onyx was known in previous seasons for its young core of college-aged players and Oregon-area club players contributing greatly to its success. This season will look slightly similar for Soar, with a roster of many talented recent college graduates, as well as many more established club players. With downfield threats like Zoe Luke and Mariel Hammond, and the dominant disc movement of handler Julia Sherwood, Soar will surely be a prime matchup for the Tempest.
WEEK 3: Seattle Tempest at Bay Area Falcons
The first away matchup of the 2025 Tempest season will be in Oakland to face the Bay Area Falcons on April 5th. The Falcons are coming off of a dominant 2024 season, finishing first in the Southwest Conference with a regular season record of 5-1. Their season ended with a very close loss in the semifinals of WUL Championship Weekend, with a disappointing conclusion but many high points to be proud of. The Falcons feature a very similar roster this season, looking to make a push to WUL Championship Weekend once again. With their two leading goal scorers returning for 2025, cutter Alexi Zalk and handler Julia Mankoff, as well as assist leader Han Chen, the Tempest will need to focus on a tight defensive setup to prevent the Falcons’ fast-moving offense. On the offensive side, the Tempest should also look out for the lockdown defense of cutter Eliza Chang and handler Eliza Pugh, who are both threats in quick transitions off of turnovers. This will be one of the most challenging matchups in the Tempest season, and the team will have to find creative ways to break down the Falcons’ dominant playmaking.
WEEK 4: Seattle Tempest at Utah Wild
The third game of the season will take place in Utah against the Wild on April 12th. With another stacked roster of WUL veterans, the Utah Wild finished in second place in last year’s WUL season after losing in the finals to Colorado. The team put together a 3-3 regular season record, and stepped up during the postseason to secure a gritty semifinals win before losing in the championship game. Utah has another very similar roster to last season, with the likes of cutters Cass Williams and Kyra Khoroujnikova, as well as handlers Carly Atwell and former Tempest player Kat Songer, the Wild will have the opportunity to build on a successful 2024 with more dominant playmaking. Scoring leader Abbie Davis will return for 2025 as well. Utah will also have a much larger roster this season, providing more relief for many of its starters who play long points. The Tempest played two very close games with Utah last season, winning the first one and losing the second, both by a margin of only a couple points. If they can continue utilizing defensive intensity and finding open players on offense, this year’s matchup will be a fun one to watch.
WEEK 5: BYE
WEEk 6: Seattle Tempest at San Diego Super Bloom
The Tempest will continue their road trip to face San Diego Super Bloom on April 26th. Super Bloom finished in third place overall last season, after securing second place in the Southwest Conference with a 4-2 regular season record. During WUL Championship Weekend, the team lost to the eventual champions, Colorado Alpenglow, in a tight semifinal matchup, and eventually defeated the Bay Area Falcons in the third place game. Featuring a smaller, slightly different roster than last season with multiple impact players not returning, it's unclear if Super Bloom will be able to continue its dominance this season. However, this roster is not lacking talent. Top goal scorer Merideth Byl will be back to lead the charge, as well as hybrid player and defensive mastermind Kristen Pojunis. With quick, shifty handlers like Yu Ishii and Kelli Iwamoto, and the addition of top college talent Tori Gray, the Tempest will need to focus on stopping backfield handler movement and moving quickly up the field on offense to secure a win against this blossoming team.
WEEK 7: Seattle Tempest vs Bay Area Falcons
Returning home on May 5th for their second match up against the Bay Area Falcons, the Tempest will hope to build on their previous performance a couple weeks prior to continue pursuing hopes of making it to WUL Championship Weekend.
WEEK 8: BYE
WEEK 9: Seattle Tempest at Oregon Soar
For their final regular season game on May 17th, the Tempest will head back to Oregon to face division rivals Oregon Soar. Both teams will surely look significantly different since playing each other during Week 1, but this crucial matchup will likely determine who makes it to WUL Championship Weekend and who stays home. Tempest will once again look to build on their previous performance against Soar and take down their rivals to keep their playoff hopes alive.
