Get to know Seattle Cascades #9 Spencer Lofink

By Becca Weinberg

Seattle, WA - Four-year Seattle Cascades veteran and Issaquah native Spencer Lofink has played through many different iterations of the team. As a result, the 6’3’’ cutter knows what makes a successful and dominant player in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) and has proven himself constantly when matching up against the league’s toughest opponents.

Lofink was first introduced to ultimate frisbee in middle school when his friends started learning at a local park. After beginning to play competitively in high school, Lofink was convinced to try out for the University of Washington men’s club ultimate frisbee team, where he “truly learned the ins and outs of the game.” He was able to continue developing through multiple seasons at UW and learned the deeper strategies of the game. “Without that time at UW, I would not be the player I am today for the Cascades,” he said.

Quickly enamored of the Seattle ultimate frisbee community, Lofink involved himself with many events and pick-up games as he continued playing. “The best part about playing ultimate in Seattle is the tight knit community that you are adopted into,” he said. “It is truly a special group of amazing people who are very passionate about the sport and those who participate in it.” Lofink enjoys interacting with as many members of the community as he can. “I have become friends with so many players in Seattle that it is impossible to show up to any frisbee game, practice, or other related event without also running into multiple friends,” he said. He has also coached at Issaquah High school for multiple years, and is grateful for the opportunity to give back.

Lofink joined the Cascades in 2021, and has become known for beautiful throws into space and impressive diving catches through his dynamic cutter movement. Entering his fifth season, Lofink has recorded a career 92.77 completion percentage, with 4,701 throwing yards, 4,037 receiving yards, 50 goals, 74 assists, and 16 blocks through 31 total games played. Last season, Lofink led the Cascades in total completions with 468, and had the second most offensive possessions on the team with 339.

The team is following up a strong 2024 campaign, advancing all the way to the UFA semi finals and losing a close battle to the Carolina Flyers. Finishing the season with an 11-4 record, Lofink looks back on the season with hopes of continuing to build on the team’s success. “After struggling as a team to win more than 3-4 games a season during my first three years on the team, we were able to upset multiple favorites throughout the year and made it all the way to Championship Weekend,” Lofink said. “There is a special shared sense of achievement between those of us who have been a part of a team that finally broke through years of hardship.” Lofink recorded 12 assists in the 2024 playoffs, setting a new Cascades franchise record for postseason assists.

With his sights set on the upcoming season, Lofink cherishes his time playing under the lights at Seattle’s Memorial Stadium during Cascades home games. “There is no other experience playing ultimate frisbee like playing in front of thousands of people who are cheering you on,” he said. “I especially enjoy getting a bunch of high fives from kids reaching down from the stands after a score. It’s an incredible experience.”

While looking towards the future, Lofink hopes to continue boosting the team’s competitive drive as a difference maker on the field for seasons to come. “I am most looking forward to continuing success on the field this year and making Cascades games a bigger draw for ultimate fans in Seattle this year,” he said. Keep an eye out for #9 as the Cascades season gets underway in April.
