Seattle, WA - Continuing with Circling Seattle Sports furthered coverage of minor-league/semi-pro/affiliate teams in addition to our professional sides, Seattle Mariners minor-league contributor Berlin Kofoed is providing recaps and news relative to the teams Arizona Complex League and Dominican Summer League sides. These two rosters are typically where draft picks and internationally signed players will get their start within the Seattle organization, with superstar centerfielder Julio Rodríguez making his way through these early steps to begin his career that is still very young. Here is what Berlin has for the games taking place on Monday, June 3rd, and some transactions from Tuesday, June 4th within the Seattle Mariners organization.

Seattle Mariners Transactions (6/4/2024):

  • Seattle Mariners optioned OF Jonatan Clase to Tacoma Rainiers

  • RHP Matt Tabor assigned to Everett AquaSox from ACL Mariners

  • RHP Matt Bowman assigned to Tacoma Rainiers

  • Seattle Mariners sent 3B Luis Urias outright to Tacoma Rainiers

  • Tacoma Rainiers released C Matt Scheffler

Arizona Complex League Mariners

June 3, 2024

  • ACL Mariners - ACL Padres

  • 4 - 5

  • W: Henry Martinez (1-1)

  • L: Francisco Pazos (1-2)

  • S: Maikel Miralles (3)

In the 22nd game of the season, the ACL Mariners squared off against the ACL Padres, who currently sit at 1st in the ACL West. The ACL Mariners are 3rd, and are sitting at exactly .500 in the win-loss column. They have very much felt like a team that is trying to find its footing and, with this many games under their belt, they should be showing what their major strengths and weaknesses are.

In this game, they hit less than the Padres, struck out more, and struggled to bring home guys in scoring position, going 1-for-7. Looking just at batting averages, it is surprising that the ACL Mariners aren’t dominating the league more, but that’s just showing how unique playing in the ACL is overall. At the end of nine innings, the Mariners found themselves earning another loss, falling 4-5 against the Padres.

Juan Pinto started off on the mound for his 5th game, being awarded with no decision. After facing 12 batters, Pinto did strike out three and walked none, but allowed three hits and one run to get by him. The pitcher awarded the loss was Francisco Pazos (1-2) after coming into the 4th inning. Pazos faced just a few more batters, but only struckout once. The 4 runs against him raised his ERA to 3.75.

  • Pinto’s final line: 3.0IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 3K, 0HR, 5.06ERA.

  • Pazos’s final line: 3.0IP, 5H, 4R, 3ER, 1BB, 1K, 0HR, 3.75ERA.

Felnin Celesten and Jarrod Belbin got the guys going early on in the game, scoring two from a single and a groundout. It’s a solid start, but back-to-back triples (how often does one get to write that?) from the ACL Padres scores one. The Padres added on more in the 4th inning, with the Mariners not answering back at all. In fact, it isn’t until a wild pitch in the 7th that the Mariners get another run up. One last attempt - a solo home run from Junior Gonzalez (3) - puts the team within one, but they aren’t able to capitalize and finish closing that distance.

Dominican Summer League Mariners

  • DSL Mariners - DSL Cubs Blue

  • 3 - 6

  • W: Jhon Rosario (1-0)

  • L: Eliezer Orbe (0-1)

  • S: Eduardo Castillo (1)

The DSL season is underway, and for their first game the DSL Mariners squared off against the DSL Cubs Blue. Taking the mound for his first game as an MiLB pitcher was Gregori Arrieche, going 3.0 innings and allowing only one run. In the face of a loss, Arrieche was awarded no decision since the Mariners were in the lead coming out of the 4th inning. It’s the 5th inning where things go awry for the Mariners.

Wild pitches and singles make up the bulk of the runs for both teams in this game, clear that they are still learning how to gel and what their dynamics are going to look like throughout the season. Zeus Nunez takes the first steal of the season titles for the DSL Mariners when he steals 2nd in the bottom of the 4th inning. A grounded forceout gets Luis Bolivar out, but helps to drive Nunez home.

In the 5th inning, walks load the bases up. An extra walk scores one.A wild pitch scores another. On a sac-fly, the DSL Cubs scored once more. Despite a pitching change to hopefully secure the final out before more damage can be done, Federik Jimenez throws a wild pitch, allowing one more to score.

It is far too early in the season to know what is needed to help the DSL Mariners out. The pitching rotation has to show some more control going forward, at least while the batters sort out their own issues. It’s going to be interesting to see how these players begin to develop as the summer continues.
