August 10th, 2024 Wrap Up

Low-A: Modesto Nuts

Modesto Nuts (59-46) - Visalia Rawhide (Arizona Diamondbacks) (53-53)

  • 8 - 12

  • W: Peniel Otano (3-0)

  • L: Gage Boehm (0-1)

Game five of the series (1-4)

With this loss in game five against the Visalia Rawhide, Modesto Nuts are no longer able to even split the series. This was a higher scoring game, double digits from both sides, but there was just a bit more in the tank for Visalia in the end. Teddy McGraw took to the mound to start off his second Low-A game with Modesto, and he allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two in his one and two thirds innings. Not the strongest showing, but when he left, Modesto had been fighting to stay in the game. After Walter Ford earned his first blown save with Modesto after allowing five runs on eight hits, the loss went to Gage Boehm, who only went two thirds innings and allowed four runs.

  • McGraw’s final line: 1.2IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 2K, 0HR, 4.91ERA, 39-23.

  • Ford’s final line: 5.0IP, 8H, 5R, 5ER, 0BB, 2K, 0HR, 6.39ERA, 74-49.

  • Boehm’s final line: 0.2IP, 2H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 1K, 0HR, 21.60ERA, 33-15.

Modesto put up nearly triple the amount of strikeouts in one less at bat than Visalia while only drawing six walks. Yes, they also put up 12 hits, but when they couldn’t score on enough of those to even stay tied, the amount of hits matters a little less. They were 6-for-14 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight on base throughout. They got five runs up early on, which felt strong compared to the two that Visalia had managed to score in the same amount of time, but then Visalia put up five of their own in three innings while Modesto scored nothing, and they just couldn’t quite recover. In the bottom of the eighth, a bases-loaded walk, force out, and single tied things up between both teams, but then Visalia tacked on another four runs in the top of the ninth, leaving Modesto in the dust at 8-12.

High-A: Everett Aquasox

Everett AquaSox (49-58) - Hillsboro Hops (Arizona Diamondbacks) (55-51)

  • 4 - 5 F/10

  • W: Philip Abner (2-0)

  • L: Holden Laws (1-3)

Game five of the series (1-4)

A narrow 10th-inning loss in game five not only meant a loss just in this game, but also for the series overall between the Everett AquaSox and the Hillsboro Hops. Ty Cummings took to the mound for six innings and, despite allowing seven hits and one walk, only two runs scored. The eventual loss instead went to Holden Laws, for his incredibly unfortunate one third innings where two walks and two hits turned into the final two runs scored.

  • Cummings’s final line: 6.0IP, 7H, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 5K, 0HR, 4.15ERA, 83-52.

  • Laws’s final line: 0.1IP, 2H, 2R, 1ER, 2BB, 1K, 0HR, 4.58ERA, 23-14.

The AquaSox put up ten hits but just kept leaving runners stranded. They were 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, and the team left on base was ten. Overall, Hillsboro just barely did better, with one extra strikeout but also one more hit in the end. Games that are one-run are always so maddening to watch, because if my team is in the lead, I’m just stressed the entire time, and if they’re behind? Then I’m just losing my mind wondering why they can’t get just that one more run to at least tie the game. The walk-off walk to end the game was so frustrating to see, and I know that Everett can do better than how this game went.

AA: Arkansas Travelers

Arkansas Travelers (58-48) - Tulsa Drillers (LA Dodgers) (51-55)

  • 6 - 3

  • W: Peyton Alford (5-1)

  • L: Antonio Knowles (2-4)

Game five of the series (5-0)

Five wins in a row for the Arkansas Travelers! The series so far has been a complete shutout from the Travs against the Tulsa Drillers, and it’s been so amazing to watch. The pitching in this series has been powerful, and in game five, the batting also joined in for a strong 6-3 victory. Brandyn Garcia only allowed one hit in his three innings in charge, striking out three and not allowing a single run. After Logan Gragg allowed a hit and a walk in his two thirds innings, he was subbed out with Peyton Alford who came in for the win, despite earning two runs on one hit and one walk. Gragg earned his fourth hold and Alford was awarded with his fifth win.

  • Garcia’s final line: 3.0IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 3K, 0HR, 2.73ERA, 40-24.

  • Gragg’s final line: 0.2IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 0K, 0HR, 4.84ERA, 26-14.

  • Alford’s final line: 1.1IP, 1H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 2K, 1HR, 2.40ERA, 27-15.

The team put together ten hits through their eight innings, with an especially strong eighth inning. They were 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position. With things tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, Ben Williamson and Hogan Windish walked back to back with no outs. A single from Brock Rodden loaded the bases up just in time for yet another walk, this time to Victor Labrada to score Williamson. Tulsa swapped out their pitcher, and the next guy allowed Blake Rambusch to single and bring home Windish. After a double play put up two outs, Labrada stole (11) 3rd base and Rambusch stole (6) second base. A single from Kaden Polcovich combined with a throwing error allowed both Labrada and Rambusch to score, giving them their final six runs to take the win.

AAA: Tacoma Rainiers

Tacoma Rainiers (64-49) - Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks) (55-57)

  • 12 - 5

  • W: Josh Fleming (1-0)

  • L: Kyle Amendt (0-2)

Game five of the series (4-1)

Ten hits and two home runs from the Tacoma Rainiers helped them take their fourth win in the series against the Reno Aces, ensuring a series victory in game five. However, they did also rack up 12 strikeouts in their 36 at bats, compared to only four strikeouts through 32 at bats for Reno. Blas Castano got the start, and he went six innings and only earned three runs from six hits (two homers) and two walks. The win, however, went to Josh Fleming who came in for the seventh inning and, despite also earning the blown save, only allowed one run from a solo homer.

  • Castano’s final line: 6.0IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 2K, 2HR, 5.20ERA, 88-57.

  • Fleming’s final line: 1.0IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 0K, 1HR, 10.80ERA, 8-6.

The lead went back and forth until the top of the 8th inning, where both teams were tied 4-4 after a solo homer from Reno. After back-to-back walks and a single from Jason Vosler, another single from Spencer Packard brought home both Luis Urias and Tyler Locklear. Another single loaded the bases up and, after a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Rhylan Thomas doubled (2) to bring in Nick Solak (pinch-running for an injured Packard), Jake Slaughter, and Duke Ellis. Samad Taylor singled to score Thomas, giving them a strong 10-4 lead at the end of the inning. Reno got one more run in the bottom of the inning, but a two-run homer from Solak (5) out of right field gave them their final 12 runs, far too much for Reno to fight back from.
