August 09, 2024 Wrap Up
Dominican Summer League
DSL Mariners (14-33) - DSL Cardinals (23-22)
3 - 7
W: Xavier Cruz (3-0)
L: Fernando Silvera (1-3)
A rough ninth inning from the DSL Cardinals saw the DSL Mariners once again taking the loss, falling 3-7 and staying with only 13 wins for the time being. Cristian Aray started things off for a strong three innings, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four, but the pitchers that came in after him couldn’t, for the most part, maintain that power. The loss went to the pitcher in charge of that final inning that saw the DSL Cardinals putting up four runs: Fernando Silvera.
Aray’s final line: 3.0IP, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 4K, 0HR, 4.40ERA.
Silvera’s final line: 1.1IP, 3H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 3K, 0HR, 9.39ERA.
Despite putting up the first run of the game, the momentum behind the DSL Mariners didn’t continue for long, and when the DSL Cardinals put up three runs in the fifth inning, it looked like they were cooked. The final inning saw their opponents putting up another four runs, taking the tied game away and running away with it. The season is nearly done, and the back and forth of their gameplay is still tough to watch. They are having a tough time coming together as a team for more than a game or two at a time, but I would still love to see just a handful of wins to close the 2024 season out.
Low-A Modesto Nuts
Modesto Nuts (59-45) - Visalia Rawhide (Arizona Diamondbacks) (52-53)
3 - 5
W: Jorge Minyety (3-0)
L: Adrian Quintana (0-1)
S: Alexis Liebano (5)
Game four of the series (1-3)
With the Visalia Rawhide putting up run after run through several innings, the Modesto Nuts just couldn’t seem to take the lead, dropping their third with of the series. There were only a couple of innings with runs for the Nuts, which is obviously not nearly enough in these later season games. Ashton Izzi got the start, going five innings and allowing two runs on three hits, but the eventual loss wouldn’t go to him. Instead, that would go to Adrian Quintana after he allowed the final two runs of the night that allowed Visalia to run off with the victory.
Izzi’s final line: 5.0IP, 3H, 2R, 0ER, 3BB, 4K, 0HR, 2.98ERA, 76-50.
Quintana’s final line: 2.0IP, 1H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 2K, 0HR, 2.29ERA, 41-25.
Modesto struck out eleven times in 21 at bats, while only managing to rack up four total hits and eight walks. Modesto only managed to take the lead once from Visalia, during the fifth inning when a single from Milkar Perez and a throwing error scored Carlos Jimenez from second base, and a groundout from Anthony Donofrio brought in Carson Jones. Those two runs were the final runs that they could score, though, and then they just watched as Visalia put up one run over and over, inning after inning, until they reached their final 3-5 loss for game four.
High-A Everett Aquasox
Everett AquaSox (49-57) - Hillsboro Hops (Arizona Diamondbacks) (54-51)
8 - 2
W: Shaddon Peavyhouse (3-7)
L: Roman Angelo (4-5)
Game four of the series (1-3)
After the Everett AquaSox started off the series against the Hillsboro Hops with three losses in a row, it was definitely a nice change of pace to see them finally take a strong win. Shaddon Peavyhouse started things off, going for seven innings and only allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk. Those two runs were the only two allowed by Everett pitchers the entire night, and Peavyhouse definitely earned the win that he was awarded.
Peavyhouse’s final line: 7.0IP, 7H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 4K, 0HR, 5.34ERA, 78-55.
A leadoff homer from the first pitch thrown for Michael Arroyo (8) got the AquaSox scoring early, but it was the 2nd inning where things really took off. After Josh Hood singled and Bill Knight doubled (19), a sac-fly from Axel Sanchez brought Hood home. Knight scored when Arroyo singled to the third baseman. A couple of walks loaded bases back up, ready for Jared Sundstrom to single the ball to the shortstop. A fielding error brought home both Gabriel Moncada and Arroyo, giving them a 5-0 lead by the time the final out was called. With the Hops only able to put up 2 runs, they managed more than enough to take a strong victory. Worth noting that in the top of the third inning, Knight put up his 12th homerun. Hopefully, this strength can carry forward for the remainder of this series to at least call it a split.
AA: Arkansas Travelers
Arkansas Travelers (57-48) - Tulsa Drillers (LA Dodgers) (51-54)
2 - 1
W: Jimmy Joyce (4-4)
L: Hyun-il Choi (1-5)
S: Garrett Davila (3)
Game four of the series (4-0)
This was a tough game, with the Arkansas Travelers just narrowly taking their fourth win in a row against the Tulsa Drillers during the eighth inning. There was only one inning where any runs were scored, and Arkansas just narrowly took and held onto their lead. Logan Evans took care of things for the first six innings where he threw a perfect game during that time, facing the minimum and striking out seven. It's unfortunate that he didn’t get the win in the end, since they were tied 0-0 when he was swapped out, because he really deserves it. The win instead went to Jimmy Joyce, who only allowed one run in his two innings on the mound while striking out five. Garrett Davila earned his third save when he allowed nothing in the final inning.
Evans’s final line: 6.0IP, 0H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 7K, 0HR, 2.49ERA, 71-46.
Joyce’s final line: 2.0IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 5K, 0HR, 5.98ERA, 34-23.
Davila’s final line: 1.0IP, 0H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K, 0HR, 3.40ERA, 11-7.
While Tulsa struck out a total of 12 times and drew no walks, Arkansas struck out nine times and drew two walks, along with five hits resulting in a total of two runs. There were several innings where Arkansas should have been able to put up some early runs, but just couldn’t seem to get runners in. After letting Tulsa get one run up in the top of the eighth, the Travs were finally able to get guys home. After two outs and two singles, a double from Ben Williamson (13) brought in both Jake Anchia and Harry Ford, putting them in the lead with just enough to hold onto through the end of the game.
AAA: Tacoma Rainiers
Tacoma Rainiers (63-49) - Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks) (55-56)
6 - 3
W: Michael Mariot (7-5)
L: Konnor Pilkington (3-5)
S: Joey Krehbiel (7)
Game four of the series (3-1)
Both the Tacoma Rainiers and the Reno Aces put up nine hits in this game, but with Tacoma delivering the stronger defense, they were able to take a 6-3 win in game four of this series. Michael Mariot went six innings and, although he allowed eight hits (two homers) and one walk, there were only three earned runs against him. Tacoma put up five runs in the first three innings, so he was awarded the win at the end of the game. Coming in for the final inning and facing the minimum was Joey Krehbiel, who earned his seventh save after striking out two.
Mariot’s final line: 6.0IP, 8H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 3K, 2HR, 5.17ERA, 94-64.
Krehbiel’s final line: 1.0IP, 0H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 2K, 0HR, 3.57ERA, 11-8.
This was a low strikeout game from both sides. In 33 at bats, Tacoma struck out nine times and, in 34 at bats, Reno struck out seven times. Tacoma drew four walks more than Reno, which definitely helped them in the end. Bases got loaded up with two walks and a single in the first inning with one out, leaving things ready for Spencer Packard to double (15) and drive in both Rhylan Thomas and Samad Taylor. A single from Nick Solak brought home both Tyler Locklear and Packard, giving the team an early 4-0 lead going into the stretch of the game. Another single and sac-fly throughout the game kept them in the lead and gave them their third win of the series, ensuring, at the very least, a series split.
