August 06, 2024 Wrap Up
Dominican Summer League
DSL Mariners (12-32) - DSL Nationals (19-25)
6 - 9
W: Deiver Oliveros (0-1)
L: Olivier Gomez (3-2)
I brought up this game as it was live and watched it, in real time, go from a 4-4 tie to the DSL Mariners losing 4-7 to the DSL Nationals. In the end, I’m happy that they were able to put up a couple more runs, but it was still tough to see that loss start to happen. Mathias Sato got the game going, working through 3.0 innings and allowing 0 runs to score through one hit and one walk. His hard work, however, was ultimately not enough against the strength that suddenly surged from the DSL Nationals in later innings. The loss ultimately went to Olivier Gomez after he allowed 4 runs on 1 hits and 3 walks in 0.2 innings.
Sato’s final line: 3.0IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K, 0HR, 6.04ERA.
Gomez’s final line: 0.2IP, 1H, 4R, 0ER, 3BB, 0K, 0HR, 4.91ERA.
Both teams put up eight hits and earned three errors, but with the DSL Nationals drawing twice as many walks, they were able to take the lead and the win away from the DSL Mariners. In the 6th inning alone, the DSL Nationals put up four runs while the DSL Mariners answered back with 0. The teams were neck and neck for so much of the game, until a double from the DSL Nationals gave them three runs and a powerful lead that the DSL Mariners couldn’t overcome. There was some great work done in the final inning, with a triple from Joshua Francis (1), scoring on a sac-fly from Deuri Castillo and a solo homer from Eduardo Ponce (4) closing the gap, but it just wasn’t enough to take another victory.
Low-A: Modesto Nuts
Modesto Nuts (58-43) - Visalia Rawhide (Arizona Diamondbacks) (50-52)
11 - 13
W: Eric Dominguez (2-1)
L: Anyelo Ovando (3-4)
S: Alexis Liebano (4)
Game 01 Recap (0-1)
The four errors that came from the Modesto Nuts definitely helped to work against them in game one of their series versus the Visalia Rawhide, and saw them take the loss. Both teams put up double-digit runs, with the lead swapping back and forth constantly. Tyler Gough took to the mound for 2.1 innings and, unfortunately, allowed four runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three. Given the wild nature of this game, he was spared the loss in the end, with that instead going to Anyelo Ovando after he covered 2.0 innings and allowed four runs of his own.
The Mariners 2024 12th round draft pick, Evan Truitt, made his first appearance in this game in the final inning. He only went 0.2 innings, allowing two runs on three walks and 0 hits while striking out 0, but it was quite the situation to slot him into and I fully intend to see him even out in the games to come.
Gough’s final line: 2.1IP, 2H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 3K, 0HR, 4.46ERA, 52-29.
Ovando’s final line: 2.0IP, 3H, 4R, 2ER, 2BB, 0K, 0HR, 5.21ERA, 42-22.
Truitt’s final line: 0.2IP, 0H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 0K, 0HR, 27.00ERA, 32-17.
In addition to Truitt making his appearance, several other draft picks got their first game played: round 13 pick Brandon Eike, round 14 pick Austin St. Laurent, and round 10 pick Anthony Donofrio. All three of them put up a hit and at least one RBI, including a solo homer from Eike (1) after he earlier got hit by a pitch.
In 35 at bats, the Nuts only struck out seven times, drew five walks, and earned 11 runs off seven hits. Visalia just had a bit more luck on their side, and less errors. Modesto put up a whopping six runs in one inning alone before Visalia even got a run, but they couldn’t hold onto that lead. In fact, it was the next inning where Visalia put up seven runs, and that was all before the third inning was even finished. I really wanted to see Modesto walk away with the win after everything that happened early on, but the final run came off of a solo homer from Milkar Perez (11), with the next three batters being retired in order. The series is new, so there is still plenty of time for Modesto to take some wins and hopefully take enough to win the series.
High-A: Everett Aquasox
Everett AquaSox (48-55) - Hillsboro Hops (Arizona Diamondbacks) (52-50)
3 - 7
W: Listher Sosa (4-2)
L: Ryan Hawks (5-8)
Game 01 Recap (0-1)
In game one of the series between the Everett AquaSox and the Hillsboro Hops, the AquaSox found themselves facing off against rehabbing Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher, Merrill Kelly. Obviously, this is a tough situation to find the team in, but they did manage to get six hits and three runs off him. Somehow, they were shut out by the remaining pitchers more than they were against Kelly. Ryan Hawks started things off for Everett, and he had a much rougher showing, allowing six runs through nine hits (two home runs) and taking away the loss at the end of the game.
Hawks’s final line: 6.0IP, 9H, 6R, 6ER, 0BB, 0K, 2HR, 5.87ERA, 75-58.
Everett went into the third inning tied with Hillsboro, 1-1. A double from Axel Sanchez (6) put him within scoring position, and next up to bat was Michael Arroyo, knocking a home run (7) out of right field and giving the team a two run lead. Unfortunately, that was the last run that the team would score, and Hillsboro quickly took the lead back away from them. Hillsboro was only struck out twice. Everett put up eight strikeouts over 33 at bats, which is decent, but it was still too much against the Hops. Hoping to see Everett link together more runs going forward, because this was a rough game to see.
AA: Arkansas Travelers
Arkansas Travelers (54-48) - Tulsa Drillers (LA Dodgers) (51-51)
2 - 0
W: Jimmy Joyce (3-4)
L: Jerming Rosario (2-3)
S: Troy Taylor (15)
Game 01 Recap (1-0)
Game one between the Arkansas Travelers and the Tulsa Drillers saw Reid VanScoter take the mound for 3.0 innings, where he allowed no runs on three hits while striking out three. It looks like he’s still on a bit of a pitching limit since returning from his short IL stint, so the ultimate win didn’t go to him. Instead, coming in for the next 2.0 innings and also allowing no runs from two hits was Jimmy Joyce. He earned his third win of the season from this game.
And then, because I will never stop talking about him, Troy Taylor once again was put into a save scenario. This game marked his 16th save opportunity with Arkansas and he successfully earned his 15th save, dropping his ERA with the team to 1.21 and striking out three while allowing one hit. Not only did he keep the win for Arkansas, but he kept the shutout that each pitcher before him had worked for.
VanScoter’s final line: 3.0IP, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 3K, 0HR, 3.86ERA, 46-32.
Joyce’s final line: 2.0IP, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K, 0HR, 6.26ERA, 21-15.
Taylor’s final line: 1.0IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 3K, 0HR, 1.21ERA, 12-10.
This was an early-scoring game followed by inning after inning of just defense. After a walk, a single, another walk, and a strikeout, Alberto Rodriguez singled on a ground ball to right field, scoring Harry Ford and Cole Young. Outside of that, the batting slowed down greatly. The team put up a total of ten strikeouts in 26 at bats, along with four walks and four hits. They were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. I love seeing the team win, and watching a total of five pitchers manage to pitch a combined shutout with only five total hits, but this was still a game that the offense should have been able to put up more.
AAA: Tacoma Rainiers
Tacoma Rainiers (61-48) - Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks) (54-54)
6 - 5
W: Casey Lawrence (7-8)
L: Dylan File (0-2)
S: Gabe Speier (1)
Game 01 Recap (1-0)
Despite some struggles from starting pitcher Casey Lawrence, the Tacoma Rainiers offense made sure to give him enough support in game one of their series against the Reno Aces so he could still earn his win. He took to the mound for 5.2 innings, allowed six hits and two walks that resulted in four runs, while only striking out two of the 24 batters that he faced. Gabe Speier covered the mound for the final inning and, although he allowed one hit and one walk, there were no runs scored and he was awarded his first win with Tacoma.
Lawrence’s final line: 5.2IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 2K, 0HR, 6.29ERA, 78-48.
Speier’s final line: 1.0IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 0K, 0HR, 0.00ERA, 15-9.
Just because I enjoy keeping up with this, Ryan Bliss earned his 35th stolen base of the season in the top of the first, stealing second base as Dominic Canzone struck out. A single from Tyler Locklear scored Bliss and put them in an early lead. In three innings, Tacoma put together five runs, all from the short ball and a sac-fly. Reno almost tied things back up in the bottom of the fourth when they put up four runs of their own, but Tacoma just barely held on to their lead. A Luis Urias homer (7) in the top of the fifth gave them just enough in the end to take the win, which is a solid start against the Aces. Tacoma only struck out five times in 35 at bats, putting up nine hits and drawing just one walk. Those are stats that I enjoy seeing, especially as the final months of the season are now upon us. Tacoma sits at first in the PCL West and, though they’re going up against a team that is fourth in the same division, it’s important that they still keep their strikeouts low and their hits high and not let their focus begin to slide.
