August 11, 2024 Wrap Up

The DSL Mariners did not play on August 11.

Low-A: Modesto Nuts

Modesto Nuts (60-46) - Visalia Rawhide (Arizona Diamondbacks) (53-54)

  • 7 - 3

  • W: Trevor Long (1-0)

  • L: Denny Larrondo (3-5)

Game six of the series (2-4)

One more win from the Modesto Nuts in game six against the Visalia Rawhide just felt nice, even though the series was a loss. They were pretty evenly matched for stats throughout, but with a five-run second inning, Modesto was able to take an early lead and hold onto it for the entire game. Tyler Gough covered the mound for the first four innings, not allowing a single run despite the hit and two walks. Earning his first win of the season, however, was newly signed pitcher Trevor Long, who only allowed one run during his one inning on the mound (but didn’t strikeout any batters).

  • Gough’s final line: 4.0IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 2BB, 2K, 0HR, 4.26ERA, 55-33.

  • Long’s final line: 1.0IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 0K, 0HR, 4.50ERA, 14-9.

A Tai Peete homer (6) in his first at bat got Modesto going in the second inning, and they didn’t slow down. With no outs recorded, a triple from Ricardo Cova (1), double from Junior Gonzalez (2), Carter Dorighi single, wild pitch, and balk, they put up two more runs. With just Dorighi still on base, Curtis Washington Jr knocked his first homer with Modesto out of left center field, leaving them with a strong 5-0 lead. In the next inning, Junior Gonzalez also earned his first Modesto homer, adding on another solo run. Visalia were able to trickle in a few runs throughout the game, but the earlier strength from Modesto ensured them the victory in their final meeting of this series.

High-A: Everett Aquasox

Everett AquaSox (50-58) - Hillsboro Hops (Arizona Diamondbacks) (55-52)

  • 7 - 4 F/10

  • W: Juan Burgos (2-5)

  • L: Zane Russell (3-4)

Game six of the series (2-4)

This was a much better showing in this ten inning game between the Everett AquaSox and the Hillsboro Hops to end out the series, but I am still sad that they couldn’t even split it. Ryan Hawks went four innings, striking out five batters but allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. Coming in for the ninth and tenth innings to keep things locked down was Juan Burgos, and he definitely earned the win that was awarded to him after he only allowed one run.

  • Hawks’ final line: 4.0IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 5K, 0HR, 5.82ERA, 75-45.

  • Burgos’ final line: 2.0IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 3K, 0HR, 3.54ERA, 27-16.

Hillsboro only put up four hits compared to Everett’s eleven. The pitching rotation really worked hard to stop them from even getting the chance to score, which is some help that they definitely needed after how some of the earlier games went in this series. A double from Gabriel Moncada (12) scoring Connor Charping followed by a sac-fly from Michael Arroyo bringing home Axel Sanchez put them up on the board in the second inning. Things got tied up, though, in the bottom of the ninth, once again pushing them into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Colt Emerson doubled (1) to score Colin Davis, followed by a single from Josh Hood scoring Emerson. One more single from Caleb Cali brought home Hood, putting Everett in a three-run lead going into the final inning, three outs away from taking the win. A popout followed by two strikeouts from Burgos solidified their win. Hopefully, going into the next series, they can take some more wins, because it’s becoming imperative if they want to see the postseason.

AA: Arkansas Travelers

Arkansas Travelers (58-49) - Tulsa Drillers (LA Dodgers) (52-55)

  • 3 - 4

  • W: Orlando Ortiz-Mayr (7-6)

  • L: Kyle Hill (3-2)

  • S: Lucas Wepf (5)

Game six of the series (5-1)

Despite only losing by one run in the end, it was still tough seeing the Arkansas Travelers not take the sweep over the Tulsa Drillers in game six. This was such an impressive series, and I was really hoping to see that full six-game sweep. Ah well, this was still such an amazing series to watch. Reid VanScoter got the bump for five innings and, although he allowed one walk and four hits, he only earned one run and struck out six of the 20 batters he faced. The loss was awarded to Kyle Hill who came in for the sixth inning but didn’t get a single out while allowing two runs off of three hits. I can’t help but wonder if VanScoter going for the sixth inning would have resulted in a series sweep, but he’s still seemingly on a bit of a shorter pitch count since coming back from the injury list, and we’ll never know.

  • VanScoter’s final line: 5.0IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 6K, 0HR, 3.74ERA, 65-44.

  • Hill’s final line: 0.0IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 0K, 0HR, 6.41ERA, 20-12.

The batting just couldn’t back up the pitchers in this game, with them striking out eleven times in 31 at bats. They went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position. They had so many opportunities to get more runs going, but the strikeouts increased whenever someone made it on base. Arkansas was only outscored by one run in the end, mostly from a three-run sixth inning, making it just overall a difficult final game to watch. Time to go on to the next series!

AAA: Tacoma Rainiers

Tacoma Rainiers (65-49) - Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks) (55-58)

  • 8 - 4

  • W: Casey Lawrence (8-8)

  • L: Dylan File (0-3)

Game six of the series (5-1)

Both the Arkansas Travelers and the Tacoma Rainiers finished out their series with a commanding 5-1 victory, with the Rainiers taking their fifth and final win in game six against the Reno Aces. Casey Lawrence went for five innings and, though he allowed seven hits and two walks, he only earned two runs. Reno couldn’t put up more than those two runs until way later in the game, though, and with Tacoma putting up four runs through three innings, Lawrence was awarded his eighth win of the season.

  • Lawrence’s final line: 5.0IP, 7H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 1K, 0HR, 6.18ERA, 76-43.

Nick Solak got Tacoma’s first run on the board with a solo shot (6) in the top of the fourth inning. In the next inning, with runners on the corners, a disengagement violation from Reno allowed Michael Papierski to score from third. Samad Taylor singled to bring home Rhylan Thomas. This is when Tacoma took the lead that they did not allow Reno to take away from them for the rest of the game. Reno got within one run of tying in the bottom of the eighth, but a double from Luis Urias (10) scored Taylor, followed by a three-run homer (7) from Solak scoring Urias and Jason Vosler stretched that lead out and allowed Tacoma to comfortably and confidently take the victory.
